Give Me Five! with Father Hugo Medellín, CM
A monthly series in Vincentian Voices where we ask five random questions to an Eastern Province Priest or Brother.
This month, we talk with Father Hugo Medellín, CM, who serves as parochial vicar at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Charlotte, NC. We thought we’d ask Fr. Medellín a few questions.
If you could travel back in time to any period in history for a visit, what time period would you visit and why?
If I could travel on time, I would go to Europe right after World War II. The purpose of the visit would be to rebuild so many wretched homes and to heal so many broken souls.
What was your favorite course or subject in seminary and why?
My favorite topic in the seminary was social justice. We need so much of it in our nation and in our world.
If you did not have (and answered) your calling to the priesthood, what career might you have pursued?
If I were not a priest, I would be a terrific builder.
Besides connecting with family and friends, what do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time, I like to exercise. Intense sports are my motto. Running, martial arts; anything that has to do with kicking, punching, and traditional hand-to-hand weapons. I also like chess and Karaoke signing. I do all of this alone, preferably. The reason is, I am trying to improve and do not like other people watching me while I am studying my own flaws in any of these disciplines.
If you could have dinner with one non-religious historical figure (dead or alive), who would it be and why? What might you ask them?
I would like to have dinner with Nelson Mandela. My question for him would be: How can I help fix a broken world?
