Proof of Niagara living its Mission

Here is some news St. Vincent de Paul would rejoice in.

It received confirmation of its success in the most recent U.S. News & World Report’s annual survey of “America’s Best Colleges.”

Niagara is the highest-ranking independent school from the Buffalo-Niagara region on the list in a new category of “Social Mobility”. This measures the graduation success of Pell Grant recipients and is based on Pell graduation rates. Niagara University is also recognized by U.S. News as a “Best Value,” “A+ Schools for B Students,” “Foreign Student Factor,” and “Best Colleges for Veterans.”

It has often been said that education is a way out of poverty. The dynamic of Vincentian education is to put the poor right at the center of our mission.

“St. Vincent de Paul… inspired and organized his contemporaries to serve the poor and oppressed. In this spirit, we strive to develop leaders who will make a difference in their local communities and the larger world. We teach students about the challenges and causes of poverty, and we support service learning activities where our students reach out with compassion to serve people’s basic needs.” (from Vincentian Tradition, Niagara University  website)

Niagara’s mission is rooted in the foundational documents of the Congregation of the Mission).

“schools colleges and universities should according to local circumstances admit and promote the development of, the poor.  All the students, however, should be imbued with a sensitivity for the poor, according to the spirit of the Founder, while the confreres affirm the value of Christian education and provide a Christian social formation” (Constitutions and Statutes)

Niagara University also leaped 11 spots on U.S. News & World Report’s annual survey of “America’s Best Colleges.” Niagara secured the number 32 position in “Best Regional Universities – North.” The number 32 position is a dramatic climb from number 70, which was the university’s standing in 2013.
